Kwara State MWAN chapter was launched in 2007; the first president of the association was Dr Halimat Akande. The strength of the association then was about 15 and it has since then grew steadily in number strength, achievements and activities.

The MWAN Kwara State 2019 -2021 biennium Executives members were sworn in on 3rd December, 2019 at the associations AGM with the investiture of Dr Mosunmola Folorunsho as the 7th president. The theme of the AGM was: “Stress management strategies: what works for women”

KWARA STATE MWAN 2019 -2021 BIENNUIM EXECUTIVES

KEY COURTESY AND ADVOCACY VISITS

We visited the Honorable commissioner of health and the Director General of Hospital Management Bureau to advocate for health issues in the State. The State Government elected nine female commissioners out of a total of sixteen commissioners; this is the first time in the history of Kwara State and Nigeria where the number of female commissioners will be higher than that of male commissioners. So we leverage on this to visit all of them including the First lady and Head of Service (Female). The visits were majorly to discuss who we are, what we do and that we are ready to partner with their offices. We also discussed in particular issues surrounding women and children’s health. So far we have been able to visit these Commissioner; Commissioner for health, Commissioner for LGA and Chieftaincy affairs, Commissioner for Education, Commissioner for Women affairs and Social Welfare, Commissioner for Finance, Commissioner for Special duties, Commissioner for Tertiary Institution, and Head of Service.

ADOPTION OF FACILITY IN KWARA STATE

Number of patients present: 45 female, 20 male

Activity: unveiling of the MWAN adoption plaque, Health talk and demonstrations on Breast cancer and Breast self examination

TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO FACILITIES WHERE MWAN DONATED USS MACHINE AND FETAL DOPPLERS

We also visited three facilities where we donated the fetal dopplers to. We went there to access the level of utilization of the equipment, to retrain on how to use it and to educate them on the maintenance of the equipment.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR KWARA SPORTS FESTIVAL

Kwara State organized a sports festival for all the LGAs in the state. We were invited by the office of the Commissioner of LGA to give some technical support. Two of MWAN members visited the Kwara State stadium on two sport day to support the health team and gave some recommendations on ensuring a high level of safe and hygiene environment for the athletes.

CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS AND SPONSORING OF MWAN MEMBERS FOR FREE CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING

In the month of January which is the World cervical month, the MWAN Kwara executives decided to ensure its members are the beneficiary of this important health issue, so we carried out awareness amongst ourselves and gave out paid 51 slots for free cervical cancer screening for MWAN members.

MWAN MEMBERS WITH THE FLAG UP BANNER FOR WORLD CANCER AWARENESS DAY, IN COLLABORATION WITH MINISTRY OF HEALTH

AWARENESS WALK, SCREENING, EXAMINATION AND HEALTH TALK

The MWAN Kwara State collaborated with the Kwara State ministry of health to celebrate the World cancer awareness day on the 4th February, 2020. The activities done was walk, health talk and breast examination using both palpation and Breast – i methods. The Breast-i is a new technology used to examine the breast.

About 10 MWAN members were at the awareness program, about 400 men and women were at the health talk and 300 were examined. Also, about 300 BSE flyers were distributed.

RADIO CANCER AWARENESS PROGRAMME AND HEALTH EDUCATION

On the 4th of February, a gynecologist from MWAN spoke extensively on common cancers that affect women especially breast and cervical cancers. She educated the public on Kwara Radio on prevention of these cancers and need for early screening and detection and treatment.

MWAN MEMBERS GIVE HEALTH TALK IN GIRL’S SECONDARY SCHOOL

On 5th February, 2020, three MWAN members gave health talk in Queens college, a girls secondary school in Ilorin, Kwara State metropolis  on Menstrual Hygiene, prevention of vaginal infection and Lassa fever. About 500 students and 8 teachers were in attendance.
